Black Square (Cell)

Digital C-Type print, 2016. 87cm x 60.5 cm

Black Square (Cell) is a photographic work in which we see a small square window in a prison door, through which we can make out the inky darkness of a prison cell. The cell beckons to us, whilst slight touches of rust and scratches call to mind the many interned and accused who have undoubtedly occupied its space. The work offers an intentionally ambiguous reflection on the relations between creativity and confinement, or art and institution, as well as ideas of borders and thresholds on to the unknowable or unthinkable.
