Gap
Fillers 2001 Whiteboard
with ink: readymade taken from call centre. 90cm x 120cm. Unique
object.
Commissioned by the Northern Gallery of Contemporary Art, Sunderland.
Gap Fillers is a whiteboard taken
from a functioning telephone call centre which contains a list
of reassuring and familiar phrases for operators to say to customers
during awkward gaps in conversation. Displaced from their business
function, the scripts appear to relate to notions of transcendence
and the void, whilst also reminding us that within our current
era even silence, or moments of what we thought were human care,
appear to be part of a commercialised framework.
Within exhibition contexts the work, which is has a baldly utilitarian
aesthetic, usually appears out of place, as if an element from
the gallery's administrative areas has escaped into the exhibition
space.
